Visual Arts & Photography

Evoke emotion through an expression of skill and imagination

Ailsa Mota-Eagle Painting

High aspirations

Medium: Oil on Canvas

This is my final artwork I did in high school before graduating. I chose to paint the portrait of an eagle because it was the mascot of my school and because I resembled an eagle flying from the nest as I soared into new horizons. I was largely inspired by one of my favourite wildlife artists Michael Pape while working on this piece. I wanted to communicate feelings of freedom, strength, wisdom, and courage as I went off to embark on greater challenges in life.

Pondering

Medium: Scratchboard Etching, X-Acto knife

I used scratchboard art to create an image using a special board with a black surface layer and white under layer. Using an x-acto knife, I cut into the black to reveal the white layer below. The resulting image is a series of light lines against a dark background. The image is created completely by making repeated small lines, marks, and strokes. I chose to create a lynx because I wanted to showcase each individual fur strand with the precise lines that the knife made. The contrast and texture really help to emphasize the subject.

Ever alert

Medium: Graphite

For this piece, I really wanted to focus on the different textures seen within the animal. I am very passionate about drawing animals because I feel as though I am bringing them to life as I draw them. Attention to detail and close observation is very important to me.

Fashion object in window

Medium: Graphite

The challenge for this project was to draw a designer bag in a window box using one-point perspective with one light source in pencil. Shaded textures, fold, chains, buckles, and all details of the bag were applied. The shade inside of the window display box was required in relation to where light and shadow would fall.

Still life displays

Still life photos were taken with a collection of inanimate objects arranged as the subject of a composition. I chose to use a natural light source and experimented with different materials, textures, and subjects in a controlled setting.

Breakfast photoshoot

DSLR Camera

A mood board was created for the client along with a paragraph explaining the concept for this photoshoot. I was required to follow the client brief taking information from the KLS agency pre-production document. The photoshoot was then carefully planned out and a variety of props were gathered. The images of the concept were shot using styling techniques as well as natural light coming in from the window. This helped the food to appear more fresh and vibrant.
